Small business is the backbone of Australia, or so they say, but right now, it’s breaking under pressure. Regulations change like the weather week to week, and businesses are fighting an avalanche of regulatory complexity, tightening IR requirements, interest rate volatility, workforce shortages and the cost-of-living pressures affecting staff and customers.

For decades, governments of all persuasions have praised small business while quietly tightening the screws. More regulation. More compliance. More complexity. Less representation.

It’s not about which party is in power - it’s about the structural reality that small business owners face regardless of the political cycle.

When the government recently introduced new taxation changes - only to repeal them after public backlash - it felt like watching a child caught with their hand in the cookie jar. They didn’t remove the taxes because it was wrong, they removed them because they were caught. That's a completely different dynamic at play, as it means if not now, then when will the taxes be applied?

That’s the environment small businesses operate in, one of reactive policy, short‑term thinking, and a system that rewards survival, not capability.

According to the ABS, 350,700 Australian businesses exited the market between June 2023 and June 2024, the highest churn (30.1%) ever recorded. IPA Australia reports compliance costs have risen 25–30 per cent in five years. COSBOA shows that SMEs spend 100+ hours per year on compliance alone.

These pressures don’t just affect the business. They affect the owner - their cognitive load, their leadership rhythm, their decision clarity, and their operational capability.

Most owners think they have a sales problem. But sales don’t create spot fires. Broken operational processes do. The real failure points (often caused by spot fire distractions) are poor financial rhythms, governance gaps, safety and compliance friction, decision fatigue, inconsistent delivery, or even a shortfall in capability, and it's often the back-end operation failures that drain cash flow in the first place. These unseen leaks are the cause, as they weaken the base structure. When cracks appear in the base, the castle eventually falls.

Small businesses don't fail because owners aren't trying, they fail because their operational backbone has weaknesses - weaknesses caused by competing external forces, compounded by internal failures.

Australia doesn’t need more slogans about “the backbone of the economy.” It needs structural reform - in policy and in practice.

Owners don’t need more pressure. They need clarity, capability, and operational maturity.

The good news - is that systems can be rebuilt, one piece at a time, one foot in front of the other, with a focus on being better today than you were yesterday.
